GIS Tools

A series of interactive web maps, containing wheat related information, have been created using ArcIMS from ESRI. A Regional Web Map is accessible from the main menu and series of Country Maps are available from the corresponding country pages. All maps use the same tools and work in the same way. A brief description of functions and how to use the tools is as follows.

The map tool consists of 3 components:

  • Toolbar: Tools available include zoom in / out, pan, identify (obtains tabular information about specific features), query using SQL e.g., find all wheat sites in Turkey, buffer, selection and print. Click HERE for a full description of tools.
  • Map: Displays the different layers of information. Multiple layers can be displayed at the same time. Note: In this tool it is not possible to change the way the layers are displayed i.e., colours or symbols are fixed. The display order of the layers is also fixed, so some layers might be obscured by other layers on the map.
  • Map Layers: A series of layers of information relating to wheat (e.g., wheat trial sites), environment (e.g., precipitation) and socio-economics (e.g., market access) are included. These can be switched on or off simply by clicking in the “Visible” check box next to the layer. [Note: To see any new layers on the map the Refresh Map button must always be clicked.] Many of the toolbar functions work only on the layer that is “Active” this is set simply by clicking in the Active circle next to the layer.
  • Click HERE for a tutorial showing a complex query using the tool.

[NOTE: Use of this tool requires a reasonably fast internet connection to run optimally.]
